At Freedom we give out food parcels on a daily basis to people in all walks of life.
An estimation of 2 million were given out nationwide. Combined, these food parcels would weigh 6 million kilograms, and stretch all the way from Bolsover to Cornwall.
Why are so many food parcels being claimed?
Here at Freedom, we have been giving out food parcels for the past 8 years. Last year, we gave out an estimated 890 food parcels to those in need. The report of a cross-party group of MPs concluded that the high cost of living, alongside delays to benefit payments, was to blame for the rise in food bank use.
A high deployment of benefit sanctions has recently been found to increase homelessness and hunger across England, as shown by the NAO who presented in their report last week that the cost of applying sanctions was more than they actually saved.
This problem is international. The UN has stated that the problem of food poverty is a reflection of societal inequality, not just fluctuations in local economies.
What can you do to help?
Donations of tinned and packaged foods with long sell-by dates are always much appreciated. As well as this, selection boxes and Christmas presents are welcomed at this time of year too. Food poverty is real issue in the local community, and we are doing all we can to help it, and we thank you for enabling us to do so. Food donations can be dropped off at the office located within Bolsover Methodist Church (S44 6NN), between the hours of 9-5 Monday to Friday. Over the Christmas period these hours may change so please ring the office on 01246241457 to check.
